This Red Sauce Chutney Recipe by Shireen Anwar, has a tangy, mildly spicy and slightly sweet flavour. You can use it as tomato sauce with pasta or rice, as a spread on bread or crackers, or as a dip with your favorite vegetables. It matches wonderfully with almost everything and has a very complex, but yet satisfying tastes combination.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups tamarind pulp
  • 1 cup dries plum
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp thinly sliced cabbage
  • 2 tbsp thinly sliced carrot
  • 2 tbsp Jaggery
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • a pinch of red food color
  • 10 button red chilies
  • 6 whole green chilies fried in oil
Cooking Method
  1. Put dried plum in a saucepan.
  2. Add water, tamarind pulp, jaggery, sugar, tomato ketchup, salt , red chili powder, red color.
  3. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 30 minutes or until mixture syrupy.
  4. Then add carrot,cabbage, red chilies and fried green chilies.
  5. Cook for another 5 minutes or until syrup is thickened.
  6. Remove from the heat.
  7. Take it out in a serving bowl.
  8. Red sauce Chutney is ready now.

Serve with meals and snacks.
